Conquering the Overwhelm

Updated: Apr 15

Being stressed or overwhelmed about something is not a fun place to be, but I’m learning different strategies to pull through and get stuff done.

This afternoon, April 13th, I sat in my car after work, around 2:30 pm, feeling overwhelmed by the list of things I needed to work on swirling in my mind. My first thought was to pull out my phone and attempt to Google search "how not to be overwhelmed with the tasks I needed to complete with ADHD."

Before I could even begin typing, a thought came to my mind. A thought that could have only come from the Lord.

"Cast, burden, rest, light"

Out of the living chaos that was my mind, those words made me pause. Why would I look online for my answers when the Lord has told me that He can help me with all I need? I was attempting to lean on the knowledge of this world and my own strength, completely forgetting that it had never helped. Ever! Oh, how quickly I am to forget.

Psalm 55:22 – “Cast your burden on the Lord, and He shall sustain you; He shall never permit the righteous to be moved.”

Matthew 11:28–30 – “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”

1 Peter 5:7 – “Cast all your anxiety on him because He cares for you.

As I was talking with the Lord, I was reminded that He doesn't require me to have everything fixed all at once. This is a struggle for me because I see where I went wrong and what needs to be done, so I'll try to do it all at once, which never ends well. I end up paralyzed with worry or anxiety. Then I simultaneously beat myself up because I could not follow or complete the unrealistic goals I had set or agreed to for myself.

Today, I decided that as soon as I got home, I would write everything I was worried about on paper and pray, giving them to Jesus. Then I would separate them into what needs immediate attention and what could be put aside for another day.

I am happy to say this works. Although I didn't complete the entirety of one of the tasks under "immediate attention", I did start it, which is a plus. I can work on this throughout the week and have it completed by the end of the weekend.

  • By turning a larger task into smaller sub-tasks, I can get them done without feeling overwhelmed.

I am a Child of God, but because of this sin-cursed world, my brain doesn't function as a normal brain would. I do not identify as ADHD, but I do have it. I hope you can join me on my journey as I learn, grow, and walk with the Lord.
