Time Blindness

Updated: Apr 23

In my last post, “Conquering the Overwhelm”, I said I would complete what I needed to do by the end of the week. I started the task, which is great, but in the end, I did not work on my room throughout last week, nor did I have it completed by the end of the weekend.

So what went wrong? Why wasn’t I able to complete it? I assure you, it is not laziness

A symptom of ADHD, executive dysfunction is called Time Blindness.

The casual term “Time Blindness” basically means difficulty understanding/perceiving, calculating, and managing the passage of time. This is a real issue in my life. I could sit at a piano, play, and think I was there for only 5 minutes, but in actual reality, 4 hours had passed. I am usually really late or very early to any event. If you want me to go into more detail about this, send me a message, but I won't for this post.

Yesterday, I chose to do the same thing I did last week. I prayed, gave it to Jesus, and asked for help, but this time Habakkuk 2:2 came to mind.

"Then the Lord answered me and said:

“Write the vision

And make it plain on tablets,

That he may run who reads it.

Write the Vision: When a vision is written down, it will last longer than a thought.

Make it plain: when it is clear, simple, and specific, it will allow for easy understanding

That he may run: a written plan will supply direction, and a centered action

I incorporated my Pomodoro Tomato Timer because a physical representation of time passing helps me focus on the tasks ahead. This timer makes ticking sounds, which also helps. I then wrote about 5 things on a piece of paper.

Take out trash 5 mins

Take sheets to washer 5 mins

Set Timer 1 hr

Fold + put away cloths 5 mins

Put Music stuff away 3 mins

I set the timer to 5 minutes, began grabbing up any trash, and took it out to the dumpster. If I finished before the timer went off, then I'd reset it and begin the next task, all the while checking off and adding more tasks as I go.

Because of this method, I was able to complete all my tasks (but 1) in 5ish hours instead of weeks later.

I wanted to learn to steward my time better, and He has shown me what to do in His Word. When you turn to the Lord for help, He will answer. Wait and see what He does.

  1. Write down all that burdens you

  2. Give your prayers and worries to Jesus

  3. What needs immediate attention?

  4. Write down specific tasks

  5. Add a check box and the time you will need

  6. Begin and remember to take breaks
